The 'best' program depends on your intended use.
For basic stuff like cropping and removing red-eye, Google has an easy to use free program called Picasa. You can download it here: http://picasa.google.com/
If you need a bit more power but you don't want to spend a week ploughing through manuals, Adobe has a watered down version of Photoshop called Photoshop Elements. It costs $100 and you can download a trial version here: http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopelwin/

I don't think I've ever heard of any version of Photoshop described as a "yauner"

If you have a legit older version of Photoshop, you can upgrade to the newest for a reasonable amount. If not, I'd recommend Elements 5, or Paint Shop Pro. Microsoft Digital Suites is pretty good as well.

I somewhat have an previous Nikon Coolpix and that i take advantage of the Nikon View utility that got here with the digicam (or downloaded from Nikon internet site). you may designate the place to function the photos and the filename format you go with for to apply. I somewhat have found that no longer all cameras artwork with the outfitted-in abode windows digicam wizard (inspite of the shown fact that canon does).
