Dear Woodsonhannon,
Religion is not necessary. In fact it is manmade and there are nearly as many religions as there are human beings.
But Relationship with the awesome uncreated Creator of the universe is something else entirely. It comes to us from the Author of life.
You don't mention how old you are but I have found that the older I get the more times I find myself doing what I think is a good and loving thing to do only to find out that the person I was doing it for didn't think it was a good or loving thing at all. So just whose standard of good and loving do we follow?
When I share the Good News of Jesus Christ I'm not trying to recruit anybody. Rather I'm trying to share the Best that I know. Through the years I found myself trying to make the best of bad situations but getting more and more lost, more and more miserable. When I talk to people who are struggling to make sense of their lives I let them know what helped me in a similar situation.
When you fall in love with somebody don't you want to tell everybody you know about your love? When your team wins don't you want to tell everybody about it? When you see a good movie, hear a good song, eat at a great restaurant don't you want to share your good news?.

People often pretend that without religion there can be no morality or ethics. Nothing can the further than the truth. A person can be perfecty moral or ethical without religion. Some people also mix spirituality and religion, both are separate matters. The essence of spirituality is the belief that ultimately God exists. Religion is what men have made out of God's Messengers' teachings, sent from time to time in different parts of the world to awaken us to spirituality. What can be said however, is that most religions if used positively can lead to a certain level of spirituality.

I agree with you that God gave us common sense to use. This is an argument I have with my Christian freinds. Story of two men:
Man 1: the worst kind of scumbag around. child molester, murdered people, rapist, etc... minutes before he dies he prays to God and sincerely asks for forgiveness. Will he go to heaven? They say yes. I guess I can buy that.
Man 2: always does the right thing, helps charity, helps others, great father, husband, totaly spends his life helping others. But, he is not sure about religion, Jesus, etc... So he just believes in a higher power. Would he go to heaven or hell? They say hell!! I am sorry but the kind of God I believe in is truly loving and would not send a person like that to burn in hell while the other gets to go to heaven.
How does that make sense? Use the brain God gave to you. I really thinK heaven and hell or made up concepts from very early Christianity to scare people into the church.

Being religious is a matter of education and constitution of the brain when it is impressed with esoteric and mysticism. I estimate that in times of freedom the percentage of people practising religion is about 27%, in times of war or collective worries most evidently higher.

Religion is man's way of trying to please God. God does not tell us to practice religion. He does say that His Son, Jesus Christ is the only way to Heaven.
We as human beings can never be good enough to deserve Salvation and Heaven. What Jesus did on the cross, for us, when we accept Him as our Lord and Savior, enables us to be forgiven and declared righteous by God.
You will exist some place when you leave this earth. You don't have to worry about eternity when you accept Jesus and live the life of love for others.

I agree, people always think that if there was no organized religion, there'd be no God. You can believe in God and not be a Christian or belong to a certain religion. I think God wants us to use the common sense he gave us.

Religion based on experience and giving people a sense of purpose might have meaning but religion founded on blindly following theological dogma is unnecessary and harmful.

Just being a good person is not enough. You must follow Christ's teachings and commandments.
"Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven." Matthew 7:21
Read the entire chapter. It talks about those that did good but did not follow Christ's commandments. Even though they were good at heart, it was not enough.

I respect what you have written but wonder where you learned that just living a good life is your ticket into heaven? If living a good life is the key then how good do you have to be? How good is good enough? I am good, Mother Theresa was better. If the standard is her then I would loose out.
