It is what God told people to do when they are sick, go to the elders of the chruch, have them pray a faithful prayer and annoint you with oil.....some people call it Holy Unction, some call it annointing with oil, some use oil for other reasons, but this IS one that God said to do in His written word.
So this oil is special.
Jam 5:14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
Jam 5:15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

Anointing a person or objects plays a part in a variety of religions - Judaism, Christianity, neo-Pagan religions, etc.
I believe they are also used in Hinduism, but I'm less sure of that.

It's called "unction."
It's another superstitious ritual based on the idea that earthly objects can have "magical" properties, which we know is false. The same idea behind holy water, holy "relics," tortillas with the face of the virgin mary, the mormons' "magic underwear," etc. Regular objects (including oil) have no special or magical properties, no matter how many times they've been "blessed" by anyone.

Some religions use it as an act of purification. The whore Mary Magdalene anointed Jesus with her most precious and expensive oil, I don't think she knew what or why she was doing that at the time. Even the disciples questioned Jesus about such a frivolous use of such fine oil. Jesus explained to them that the woman was preparing him for his burial. In affect, purifying his body.
