No.
Some dojos or competitions may require them but they are pretty much optional. There is no competition that allows groin strikes and there is not style that will allow them (groin strikes) in sparing either regardless of whether they are part of a technique. I have never heard of any martial artists wearing them outside of a MMA or boxing or point fighting Tae Kwan Do competition.
The only reason they do in MMA is one it's manditory and 2 in that kind of fighting anything can happen. It's like wearing a mouth guard unless you plan on getting hit there why would you need one... When you go into a full contact competition where a groin kick is possible then wear one but in the dojo whos gonna be kicking you in the nuts. If you train in an art like Judo or Jujitsu you will never need one in fact it could cause more harm than good in those styles. And they are not mandatory in competition for many arts.

Aditional: As for the Senseis, sensei in Japan used to kick his students in the nuts. That's the biggest load of Bullshido I have every heard. Go find a Sensei who isn't full of it... And as for all these people who are saying your an idiot or you have to wear one etc... Ask the woman if they wear them and if they wear chest pads... Then call all the guys that aren't in striking arts and don't spar full contact in a striking art they have no balls so don't need a jock anyways.

I never wore one in classes for the reasons people have stated above- there is no legal contact there, so why should I wear one? Well, I was teaching a sparring class one day and fought a White Belt (the most dangerous individuals on the planet). When sparring a White Belt, an instructor often leaves openings on purpose just to see if the student will hit you. Well, I left an opening... but the student missed. Control of technique is not something most White Belts have mastered and I wished I had my cup at that point.
Just my story...hope it helps...

It would be extremely stupid not to have one. For example if you are sparring a beginner or a over agressive opponent and if they perform a low kick like a back kick, they will only get a warning from the referee, no points will be deducted and you will lose your focus and slow down.

I'll let you in on a little secret. I rarely wear one. I have got kicked there few time by accident and people definitely end up know I don't wear cup. However I know I should wear them... I hate the way cup feel, it is so uncomfort!

Yes and no, they're good to have if you have people in your class who can't control their kicks and such, but sometimes they can be a hinderance, because a glancing strike off the suporter cup can hurt you (it's happend to me and a couple of other guys in my class).

So I've resorted to not wearing one myself because of that fact, but I make sure I'm wearing my cup when the oldest female student shows up, because she's got a bad habit of hittin the cherries dead on every time, so it helps to wear one.

it mainly depends on the instructor and whether or not it's a major rule they enforce in the class.

technically. I never wore one though..... I think it can be helpful not to have one and you can take a couple good hits to it before you go sterile.

I take pride in my teeth after speding 3k on braces....so therefore i never wore a mouthguard. I knew i had to defend them. Same thing with the balls....after a couple good hits, i made sure to take care of them.

I never competed though. Just sparring in classes and tests.

Is a "MOUTH PIECE" in Boxing a must ?

It only took one time on the ice playing Hockey without one, before I learned my lesson, never again. Yes a Hockey puck is by far harder then your foot and that don't feel well either.

DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT.

Especially if you are sparring an idiot. My Sensei's, Sensei (in Japan) used to kick his students in the nuts as a cup test LOL.

Do you want your kids born with black eyes? If you answer yes, then don't wear a cup. And the natural selection process begins.
