It shouldn't be a mistake for being proud of your man. I wish I could hear that sometimes.

Did you know him when he was different?
It sounds like an odd compliment, but not a bad one. Especially telling him you are proud of him. Guys do like to hear that, even if they have no idea why you are proud. One of the best moments of my life happened the day I finished graduate school. My wife (still my fiancee' at the time) through her arms around me and hugged me, saying, "I'm so proud of you!" I actually shed a tear.
I told her, "Thank you, Sweetheart. I won't let you down!"

Nice thing to say but that is what I tell my child. It may have sounded mothering with the term "young man"
"I'm lucky to have a man like you. Some things really do get better with age."

Why would it be a mistake, you're proud of him and he should know that, unless he was acting insulted, I don't see what the problem would be.

Not if you are being totally honest. Guys need just as much self esteem as we do, more maybe because it's a tough world out there sometimes.

no, why would it be? Every guy relishes in the fact his woman is proud of him... especialy if it is not something he hears everyday. I am sure he really appreciates hearing that.

Why did he react strangely? He may have felt that you were insinuating that he was not a good person before, but other than that I don't see the big deal.
