MSRP-Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price. Invoice is the invoice total the dealership pays for the vehicle. But here is where I disagree with Suzan. Edmund's is not always right, and doesn't add in the interest the dealers pay for the vehicles, or any overhead a dealership has to pay to sell the car. On new cars, they get allotted a small amount to fill the car up with gas, but with gas prices what they are, it is no where near what it actually costs. For each day the vehicle is on their lot, they are charged interest, which is NOT included in the invoice price. Yes, there are incentives out there, and the dealership is required to offer you whatever incentive you qualify for. And periodically they are audited about those incentives, can and do get healthy fines if not offered to qualified customers. I worked for a dealership that got fined 20,000.00 for not following the incentive regulations!! They missed 3 incentives!!! So use Edmund's as a guide, not to get robbed, but don't hold dealerships to that exact amount. Who knows, they could have added something to the vehicle that isn't on the factory invoice!

Breyet is right, but I would also add that invoice is below MSRP or the suggested retail price. Invoice is typically near what the dealer pays to get the car. Getting invoice price or below is not too hard these days. Go through the dealer's internet rep and you can usually get a deal close to or at invoice without much hassle.

The MSRP is the Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price, or what the manufacturer sugfgests that the dealer sell the car for. The invoice price is the price the dealer bought the car from the factory for (minus any incentives and holdbacks.) You can get more info on incentives, holdbacks and how much people are paying for particular vehciles at edmunds.com.

Suzan has it correct.
I always try to by my cars 1-3 percent under Invoice.
