Yes it is called Polyphasic sleep or da vinci sleep or the uberman sleep it takes a while to adjust for the first 1-2 weeks but after that it is awesome. You have 20-45 minutes naps through the day about 2-5 times building up to about 2-5 hours of sleep a day, Famous people who have used this are
Da Vinci, Lord Byron, Paul Erdos, Steve Fossett, Buckminister Fuller, Vilna Gaon, Ellen McArthur, Sir Hubbert Opperaman, Claudio Stampi, P.Diddy and Rhaegar.

Some are unverified but yes it works and it is good :) .There has been research into it and it causes no negative health side effects what so ever once your body adjusts when your nap comes you will immediately fall into a deep good sleep, you need to take your naps the same tame each day though so your body clock can sync. Try it out, you can look up a lot about it on the net and at www.wikipedia.org
remember there is an adjustment time, goodluck

Everyone's sleep habits are different. Some require 10 hours some less. 3 seems like a small amount I seem to need more than 3 more like 6 or so.

No I don't think so, because your body will start to ware down over time, and you might start tripping. Its not healthy for your body. Its good to get 7 -8 hours every night. If you are having trouble sleeping you may need to go to the doctor and get on some medicine to help you sleep.

Not ususally, but there are some people who can. Also if they meditate that can help with less sleep. I did know a mystic guy who only slept 3 hours a day and had high energy, but he is a Sufi mystic.

I'm doing it today.
I've gone a full week with that amount of sleep before. It puts me in a zombie like state but I can function at a reasonable level.
