I'll be using it mostly to make clothing and some drapes and other home decor. I've been sewing for over 20 years so I'm fairly experienced. I've used both White and Singer machines and don't care for either. I'm thinking of going with a computerized machine but have no experience with them. I'd like to stay under $300 if possible. Thanks!

No need to be snotty! I said I'd like to stay under $300 but I don't have to.

It depends on your budget. If you are limited, but want quality, consider a used machine. There are many high-end machines out there in a closet. Many people new to sewing, or as a gift have these machines with little or no use.

I bought an old Bernina from the early 90's. It still had the plastic on the machine from purchase. It is far better than any of the new, cheap machines I have used. I paid less than $200 for it. Of course, for good deals put the word out, be patient, and look in a variety of places, like Ebay deals locally (no shipping), Craigslist, newspaper, and garage sales.

Also, don't be afraid to check out machine sales and shops, if nothing else, but to play around on the machine. Be discerning of what you really want and need, and what is just extra to you.

I agree that a computerized machine will cost more than $300. If anyone tries to sell you one saying it's below that "Buyer Beware!". Someone also suggested checking out sewing machine stores...excellent idea! Though the machine won't be $300...they do see the models that are used at fairs and such for much less than if they were new. And the hours that are on them are pretty low.

Save up and then hit one of those shows and put your name on one of the machines used there. That is your best bet.

Good luck and keep sewing! I think that art form is coming back into style :-)

I got a Pfaff 100 for Christmas. It was $279 and does an amazing amount of things. It is in the same line as the computerized machines, but this model is a beginner machine because I'm just learning to sew.

Husqvrna. I have always had a Singer, but approx. 4 years ago I bought a Husqvrna and I love it, 2 years later I bought the Husqvrna Serger. The prices vary according to the models, what you want in them. A computizered one will roughly cost between $1200. right up to $7,000.00. Mine was approx 700., not computerized but I love it. I mostly make drapes, duvet covers, placemats, etc...Check them out they do start around $250. for basic models, they have quite a selection., and a very good reputation.

At that price, White and Singer may be your only options. Bernina is a fantastic machine and worth saving up for. If you could just do drapes for a couple of clients, you could make enough to pay for the machine in a very short period of time.
