I'm thinking about buying a 50" Samsung DLP Projection TV and I'm just wondering how regular cable looks on the tv? I also have a tivo. So I'm just curious if anyone has a rear Projection TV with tivo and cable. I dont plan on getting HD cable for some time. Thank-you

I don't know what you're paying now for cable but I would look into satellite cable. Their prices are usually much cheaper than Comcast or Time Warner. DirecTV has a HD-receiver with DVR all in one. That way you don't need Tivo & pay the extra monthly service charge to Tivo. You only pay DirecTV. You pick a service plan (usually $45 for basic) + $5 for DVR service + $10 for HD channels. You monthly bill would be about $60.

Does regular cable tv look good on a HDTV? Well it depends on what your are comparing it to. Regular cable will look better on a normal tube tv than a 50" DLP. The smaller the TV the better regular cable will look because it is being projected at 480i.

Obviously HD will blow regular cable away, but thats not an option from what you are saying.

Also, if your 50" samsung is a widescreen (16:9) then regular cable will look even worse, because it is all broadcast at 4:3. You can watch it at 4:3 on the big tv but you will get big black bars down each side. If you convert the 4:3 to 16:9 you will get a lot of fat people.

You will definately want to get an HD box from your cable or satellite provider.

Yes, when watching SD you will have black bars on the sides, however the HD boxes are great at zooming and making less of a bother then standard cable.

In a few weeks Dish Network is going to be giving away their HD DVR no paying the $200 for it. I would look into it.

The channels that broadcast in HighDef look great.

The others look worse than they did before. If you don't have HD cable, I wouldn't get an HD TV.

We have a 42" Sony HD plasma, and you can definitely notice a difference. You might want to check with your cable provider and see how many channels they offer in HighDef to see if it's worth it to you.

It looks OK, but your wasting the whole point of HDTV if you go that route. Whatever cable or satellite company your with should have a HDTV package that you can subscribe to. It's worth it..

i think since u can see so much more clearly on the new lcd tvs that you are seeing noise which is little imperfections on the regular cable. if you get an lcd you should wire up with fiber-optics and therefore it will be clear of noise
