After many years of breeding, I still cannot tell when they are all whelped. I often wake up to find one more delivered after I finally went to bed.. It is far safer to take her to the vet the day after puppies are born to have a good checkup. .The vet will usually give a pitocin shot to make sure all is expelled. ( just as in human birthing)
Prenatal ultrasounds are rarely accurate as to the count of puppies.

That is why breeders have ultrasounds and x-rays done during the pregnancy...so they have SOME idea. You may want to tkae the dog to the vet for an x-ray or at least palpation. They may give an oxytocin injection just to be sure, it depends on the vet.

If she had problems giving birth there is a possibility there might be more pups. feel her her belly between the back legs. Be careful and gentle and feel for any large lumps. You can look for a foul smell or discharge from her rear area. If any of these persist after 3 days of the birth i would advise taking her to the vet

When the placenta comes out.
If it is not expelled , IMMEDIATELY take the dog to the vet---or else she will die. End of story, the dog will die if there is a puppy or placenta left in her.

well if you were responsible you would have taken your dog to the vet and gotten an ultrasound which can be a good indicator of how many she should have.
