The best place to check UK used car values (if you're not in the trade) is Parkers - either at http://www.parkers.co.uk/ or in the Parkers' Guide available with the motoring magazines in most good newsagents.
Your Mégane can be valued at http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/used-prices/Derivatives.aspx?model=715&plate=60&buysell=sell

A dealer will use the CAP "Black Book" (http://www.cap.co.uk/ ) and Glass's Guide (http://www.glass.co.uk/uk/en/ ) to price a used car. You can also obtain a valuation for your car at the Glass's website for £3.50.

Look it up on kelley blue book to get the value of the car:

http://www.kbb.com/

I'm not sure where you are (you sound british or aussie), so there might be differences in the value there, but you can get a good idea of what it's worth in american dollars, then adjust for any damage - you can take it to an auto-body shop and have them give you a quote for fixing it up to cherry.

Good luck - and congrats on the new addition to your family, though your life as you once knew it is officially over!
