Espresso is always black. It is always made with a machine.
The word espresso is derived from the Italian word for express since espresso is made for and served immediately to the customer.
if a drop of milk is added it is called machiatto.
Then depending on how much additional milk you add and how milk is texturized you can have capuccino or latte.

Espresso is drunk black no milk or cream whatsoever.
It's coffee concentrated in much less water. Making it much stronger.
Usually, aficionados of espresso drink it with no sugar either, for its bitter taste, but some like some sugar.

Black. If it's got milk its not an espresso. It's something else. In Spain they would call it a "cortado" but I don't know if the Italians have an equivalent. Incidentally, if you put a shot of baileys in an espresso it's lovely.

Espresso is always black.
If a splash of hot steamed milk is added, it's called a macchiato.
Any more milk and it becomes a caffe latte.
