Depending on how patchy it is, you can go with what girly-girls use for their eyebrows---a little eyebrow powder...
but if it's nasty-patchy, I say just shave it off---I'd rather have a clean shaven man than one who can't grow a proper beard.

This answer is in no way scientific, but my recommendation is to let it grow any ways. Let grow a month shave. Repeat. Do this for about 5 or 6 months. It should fill itself.

Maybe you can get that spray paint that used to always be advertised on late night TV. It was for guys who were getting bald and it painted their scalp the color of their hair to give the appearance of a full growth of hair. Maybe you can be the first to use it on a scraggly beard.

Eyebrow pencil, hubby does it would kill me if he knew i told..maybeline makes a good cheap one, they come in different colors, out side is red, looks like, well, a pencil...!!!
