Is there much difference between the two. How much is a typical check. I havn't been for years now and need 6 fillings. Will it cost me an arm and a leg?

If you can find an NHS dentist, which is half the obstacle, it will be at least 75% cheaper than a private one.
A good example of cost is a tooth whitening treatment regime I saw in a private dental add today was £275.00 for one treatment and this is a treatment which isn't even necessary, you could get a kit form boots to do the same thing for a tenner! The best laugh was this price was the surgeries "January Sale" price with a 10% Discount!
It's such an unecessary treatment it isn't available as an NHS treatment. So if thats what that costs, imagine the price of needed work!

Last year I had 4 fillings, 4 x-rays a check up and a scale and polish privately and it cost me £160. The fillings were about £20 each. Some private dentists are dearer than others though and I have heard of people paying up to £50 for a check up so it may be wise to get some price quotes first.

Hi, i am a qualified and registered dental nurse working in general practice in london.
From April 1st last year the Nhs charges in dentistry changed, there are now only 3 payment bands, a basic check up will cost £15.50, this will include any x-rays and cleaning.
Fillings will cost £42.40, this can be for one simple filling or 3 fillings, your no longer charged per filling but for the course of treatment.
Dentures and crowns now cost £189.00, as with the fillings if you need 2 crowns it will only cost 189 and the fee wont go any higher!
Then you stray into the private side of things, for example if you need a filling on a 1st molar(these are your 6's) and you decide you would rather not have an amalgam filling (silver fillings) you can have composite fillings (white tooth coloured fillings) then your looking to pay private, the goverment class this as vanity, the same applies with any tooth coloured crowns, it's not the dentist who decides that you have to pay £65 for a white filling.
Hope this helps and for anybody having trouble finding an NHS dentist try getting in contact with your local Primary Care Trust and they should be able to help you.

There is a great difference between NHS and private dentist.
You should be getting check-ups and visiting a hygienist every 6 months. This will prevent you needing 6 fillings and paying out an arm and a leg............
