In general, yes it is expensive, but it is not crushingly expensive. I moved to Boston from Los Angeles in 1994. The things I noticed are:
- excise tax on my car. The city levies an annual fee based on the value of your car. Several hundred if it is brand new, about $40 if it is a few years or more old.
- Tolls. Many bridges and roads have tolls, though they are slowly removing some. Tolls are currently about $1.
- Housing/rent. I ended up getting a pretty good deal, but in general housing is expensive, and it is all older than LA, which is a "brand new" city compared to boston.
- Auto maintenance. The roads are worse here. I've gone through several sets of tires since I moved here, due to pot holes and pipes and such ruining them.

All of that said, I've lived in Boston for nearly 13 years and love it. I visit LA often and it is always where I'm from, but Boston is home.
