I am just wondering if the path you follow has a prescribed method. Mine does not, but it doesn't feel right to "just not use it anymore." I would think some sort of ritual involving grounding, and burning the wood, is necessary? What do you think?

Momma says break 'em.

I'd just bury them though, and let them fertilize the soil. I've never retired any of mine so I haven't run into that situation yet. Though I did have to "retire" an athame that accidentally drew blood.

If you used the wand at least once, it has soaked in a quantity of your life force. The essential part of decomissioning any wand is therefore, besides paying respect to it, to reclaim the life force that's rightfully yours. There are many ways to do that. The one that usually works is this: you grind the wand to saw dust (can use sandpaper) and put it in a pouch. The pouch must be placed under your pillow when the Moon is full. In the morning, burn the particulate matter and spread the ash arond your house.

I've burnt my old tools and it works fine for me. I like using the transformative powers of fire. For me, Samhain is a good time to do it because that's when I celebrate the new half-year. It is a time for endings and beginnings, a time to say farewell to old friends (and old tools).

For things that can't be burnt, I either offer it to our local river deity as an offering or bury the item. Sometimes I have cleansed tools and then offered them to others, but I wouldn't do that with a wooden wand.

You won't believe me but I worked years ago in a new age bookstore, loved working there and I'm not even new age and this very question came up with a woman who had a broken wand that was old and made of metal.

The shop owner who was a new age witch told her of a certain ceremony to do and to BURY the wand as it was metal but it also had to be buried during a certain phase of the moon just as the ceremony had to be done.

It was a really interesting place to work and I met alot of nice people.

Call a new age bookstore is my best answer as many are owned by witches or new age practicioners.

Good luck.

Burning the wand is the best method.

you superstitious people worry about the silliest things - my god, a wand?
But before you report me, think about what you're doing - are you really saying a stick has supernatural powers? Do you realize how ridiculous that sounds? You live in the 21 Century for goodness sakes.

Well, my dog chewed up my wand (he has anxiety issues), so I did a simple candle cleansing ritual and buried it behind my house so that I could return it fully to nature. I think you should definitely ground the energy, but I don't know as burning is necessary, but I work more with air spirits than fire spirits anyway, and I usually only burn when I want to cleanse something. I don't know as wands need to be cleansed rather than grounded.

Respectful burial (completing the cycle) instead of destruction. You don't want negative stuff coming back at you threefold.

Use it as a walking stick, or give it to Fido(the family dog) to play with.

BTW if you bury it your dog will dig it out and chew on it anyways, it makes sense to give it to the dog.

I would do a ritual to bury it at the crossroads and ask it to always guide or protect you or something. you can send it to me if you want. i always could use more wands!
