Can you tell us more about how old the dog is and where it came from? I ask this because I adopted a female chihuahua that was three years old. I got her when they closed down a puppy mill. She had been used for breeding every time she came in heat. Because she was a true chihuahua (a yapper) it turns out that she had had a metal rod shoved down her throat to try to crush her voice box. It took me three different vets to discover this fact. (The first two thought it was heart problems that were making her cough.) Is the pup only coughing when he tries to bark? If the vet hasn't found anything in the xrays have him check the throat a little more carefully.

it is kennel cough. they can get it from anything. the best way you can treat it isyou can use robitussan which will calm the cough. they can get it from you walking in the house after being somewhere where a dog has walked with the cough. now is the cough followed by a gag, and if so then it is kennel cough. i work at a kennel and i see this all the time and when i come home i have to take my shoes off and wash them and wash all my clothes and then shower. keeping yourself clean from it will help your dog get over it, and keep it from spreading. it is not life threatening for puppies but very annoying. you will need to treat this beforwe you vaccinate him for this cough. once you get rid of the cough then take him down to the vet and have the shot given it is called "bordatella". you probably know this already but it will help him from getting it again. i breed golden retrievers and i recommend that all the pups be vaccinated for this as a precaution and it won't hurt to have them done every 6 months. vets say it is good for 1yr but re-do it every 6 months. good luck

Sounds like kennel cough-its common in puppies and very contagious. Take him/her to a different vet-sounds like yours does know what the H-E double hockey sticks they are doing.
To "THe H" dogs can get kennel cough without being in a kennel-being in a kennel just makes it easier to spread.

sounds like kennel cough ( this is what the bordetella vaccine protects against) i would see another vet. Usually the vet gives tehma like a week supply of a brand of benadryl and they will heal up. Dogs can get it through other dogs if you've touched them or they've been in your yard or anything

who knows for sure, Call a vet right away. A dog that small will get weaker and die quickly.
