I purchased a Casio Exilm Ex-Z1000 about 5 Months ago and have had an absolutely wonderful experience with it thus far. At around 249$ this camera is an Awsome buy. The quality of pictures that I have been able to take, has been comparable or better than those of any Huge cameras that my freinds own. All of the exilm series camera are small, easy to use, and have great quality. The one down side to such a small camera is the lack of major zoom. However the 3x Optical zoom has proven to be more than sufficiant for any every day shots. Due to the fact that the camera is 10.1 Megapixels, i was able to take a picture of a butterfly from about 4 feet away, then later zoom in using the camera's and cropping function, was able to see in clairity the individual hairs on his body. I have traveled to both Austrialia and the Bahamas with this camera and have yet to be dissapointed in any way. It uses SD memory cards, which are widely available and at a reasonable cost. I would suggest a 1gb or more card, just due to the fact that once you start taking pictures, you will not want to stop. I purchased the Sandisk Extreme III 1GB card, which allows me to take about 230 pictures. Another nice feature of the camera is the fact that you have a decent quality video feature built into it. While i wouldn't recomend recording your child's first steps with it, it's a great feature to have for everyday use. I will be glad to show you some examples of the photo's I have taken using this camera if you would like to contact me at icyblue1986@yahoo.com I tell all of my freinds, about the nothing but wonder experience that i have had with this camera, i would certainly recommend this model. The image quality and convenience more than out weigh the lack optical zoom. I would personally recommend this camera if for no other reason than the convenience, being small allows you to have it with you and get a shot of something rare, as where the bulkier SLR cameras sit at home and collect dust. Hope this helps, Good Luck!

Well, I have a Canon PowerShot S3 IS. It is a pretty nice camera with 6.0 mega pixels and 12x optical zoom. It is kinda heavy though, and not the best portable camera. The bad thing about this camera, is that you have to put in 4 AA batteries, instead of a rechargeable one. But I just have rechargeable AA batteries, so it works for me.
Or, you can try the newer Canon camera, the PowerShot G7. My dad has this camera, and it is really nice. 10x mega pixels! It is slimmer than the other camera, but still a bit heavy. But if you want a nice camera, it is probably going to be a little big. This camera has a rechargeable battery.
Both cameras are pretty fast at snapping pictures, and they can be even faster when you put them on continuous mode. They also have fun modes to play with. Really high quality pictures if you use them right! These cameras are probably on the higher side of $200-$500 though. The G7 might be over.
I hope I helped at least a little bit, good luck! :)

Everyone gave their opinion of their camera and I'm sure they are all great cameras. I love my Sony CyberShot DSC-H2. It's 6 megapixels, 12X zoom, image stabilizer, 1 sec delay between shots, comes with batteries and charger, great on batteries. When enlarged takes excellent 8X10's. Can be bought fo $300; I paid $41 too much. Hope this helps. PS I hate to promote Canon since I own a Sony, but the Canon PowerShot SD 600 has gotten good reviews.

I love my Canon Powershot S2 IS. It is 5.0 Megapixels with a 12x optical zoom, takes fantastic video with stereo sound, and you can even snap pictures while shooting a video with Videosnap feature. Multiple shooting modes includes a sports action setting for fast action pics, landscape setting for vacation pics, and produces quite the crisp panoramic stitch as well. The S3 IS has just been put on the market, but with really only minor upgrades over the S2, (like an extra effective megapixel.) For the best value, and best quality camera, I definitely recommend the Canon Powershot S2 IS.

Well Nikon is good. But for that range, you can consider Sony which has been in the forefront of digital photography, particularly the Cybershot series. Or Canon's Powershot series. Check them out at
