Doesn't that drive you crazy? My son was born September 6th,the cut off date here was September 1st,so he missed it by a few days, not only that but they we didn't know that till we went to registration, the other school districts in our areas cut offs were September 30th,so it's all b/c of where we live.So he will also be 6 when he starts!

OK i can answer your question but I might have to bore you with math in order to do so. All dates are approximate as each school district will vary somewhat...
The cut off date is usually September 15 to turn 5 (Sometimes October 1 but we'll stick to the more common here). So that means the very YOUNGEST you can be to FINISH kindergarten (roughly June 1) is approximately 5 years and 8 1/2 months. Assuming that a similar number of kids was born in each month of the year, that means that about 71% of kindergarteners will turn 6 sometime during their kindergarten year (September 15-May 31); About 21% will do so the following summer (June 1 -August 15). The remaining 8% will have their birthday between August 15 and September 14, in which case they would turn 5 in their first month at school.
The only X-factor in that formula is that some mothers feel that their children (including some that have summer birthdays) who fall before the cutoff are too young and not yet ready to be away from home for 8 hours. They have the option to hold their child back a year and sometimes do so. Thus the percentage of children who start kindergarten at age 4 and turn 5 the first month may even be slightly less than the 8% that I calculated.
But either way it's safe to say that your child will be in the majority.

My school district's cut off is September 15. My son turned 5 on August 30, so he went to kindergarten the same month he turned 5. If I had it to do over again, I would have waited until he was 6. He struggled in K and 1st grade with reading, just catching up this year in 2nd grade. Also, he is the youngest and smallest kid in his class (girls included). I think that has a huge impact on him. He struggles to keep up with the other kids. About half of the kids in his K class turned 6 in the first 3-4 months of K. So, it is definitely average and in my opinion, a very good thing.

It depends on your area and the rules of your school board. Here, in order to be in kindergarten in 2007-2008, a kid must have turned 5 by September 30, 2007... if not, they have to wait another year. There is nothing wrong with that... I was born in December, so I was a late starter, too. There are definetely more kids turning six, and some kids of parents who decide to hold their kids back because they are a little young might turn seven sometime in kindergarten... No big deal turning six in kindergarten... most people do.
I just turned 14, and I'm in the eighth grade. I started kindergarten Aug 1998.

Where I live now, the cutoff for kindergarten was Sept 1 a good 30 years ago. I moved from an area where if the child turned 5 before Dec 1st, they sent them to kindergarten. I don't like the idea of holding them back because if they ever reapeat a year, they'll be 20 years old when they graduate. The last thing I wanted to do when I was 20 was attend high school!

Where I live..the cut of date is at the very end of the calendar year. My kids both are July babies and were just 5 years old 2 months before school started. They were on the younger side because there was kids turning 6 a few months later in January.

all 3 of my daughters will be 6 when they enter kindergarten as their birthdays are in August and our cutoff is August 1st. My oldest daughter just started kindergarten and I do believe most of them are 5 turning 6 sometime during the school year. There are a total of 2 of them that were already 6 when they started. My daughter is very smart(working on a second grade level in reading and writing) but I am very glad that she had to wait that extra year because of maturity reasons.

Most kids are ages 5 or 6. My daughter turns 5 in August and can start kindergarten right away in September, but my step-daughter turned 5 this past December and has to wait to go to school until September, so she'll be 6. I put my daughter and step daughter into headstart to get them ready, and it really helps. My 4 year old can already write her name, so I recommend Headstart for kids to get them ready for kindergarten.

My son didn't start until he was turning 6 in
September. It ended up being a blessing in disguise. Boys tend to be less mature and aren't as ready at age 5. I think the reason he excels in school now is because he did wait.

Oh my goodness. I might have the same problem. My daughter is born in September but you know what it depends on what school that child attends, I know that when you are four you are in head start. I know after that you go straight to kindergarten. You suppose to be in the 1st grade at six years of age. I know you are definitely five years of age in kindergarten.
