On average you burn about 100 calories per mile. This number could be a little less or a little more depending on body type.

Your walk to and from the gym is burning about 250 calories.

A 150 pound person burns about 100 calories per mile virtually without regard to how fast they go. A 300 pound person weighs twice as much and burns twice as many calories.

A reasonable formula to calculate the calories is

Your Weight in pounds / 150 pounds * 100 calories * Miles.

So, if you weigh 120 pounds, you burn 202 calories. If you weigh 180 pounds, you burn 302 calories. If you weigh 300 pounds, you burn 504 calories.

If you walk faster, you'll burn the same number of calories during the walk but you'll also be burning calories during the rest of the time. To illustrate. Suppose instead of taking 28 minutes to walk the distance, you could walk it in 15 minutes. Although you would burn the same number of calories walking, you would be doing something during that extra 13 minutes that would also burn calories.
