I'm going to Montego Bay in April, and would like to know some phrases that would be helpful when I.m there. I find that people everywhere are more friendly when you try to speak their language.

There is no such thing as patois. Actually this word was first used by Parisian French to designate any other language spoken in France that wasn't French: these included Occitan ("mispronounced French"), Breton (sometimes also referred to as "dogbark", Lorrain, Corsican, Basque or Catalan. It is very derogatory and politically oriented. Being an Occitan myself, I know my language was written and structured well before any other modern language in Europe, including French, and its literature stands among the vastest in the world. So be careful when you use the word patois: it refers to a language that is supposed to be a lower, uneducated version of another one, one of a dominating nation. It is not a valid term for any language.

We speak English in Jamaica. Accented, but still English. Word to the wise, don't run around Jamaica trying to "speak Yard." It's not cute. No, "hey, mon's" Seen?
