The sabbath at the time of the ten commandments was the sabbath of judism, yet they work and drive and do whatever else you are not supposed to do on the sabbath, meaning friday night to saturday night.

The bible also says those who work on sabbath should be put to death, I'm confused, I thought this is murder, is the bible advocating murder?

1) The laws of the Sabbath only apply to Jews. Christian can say they are keeping the Ten Commandments but have no obligation to do so. They do have an obligation to keep the Seven Commandments of the Noahide Covenant which does not include the Sabbath.

2) Christian believe that through the crucifixion of Jesus, they were freed from the Mosaic law, at least for the most part.

3) While the biblical penalty for violating the Sabbath is, in some cases, death, the fact of the matter is that few, if any, were ever put to death by the Sanhendrin (Jewish court). The requirements set by the court to impose the death penalty were so strict that is was almost impossible to meet the burden required to kill a defendent.

4) As for the issue of whether a court imposed death sentence is murder, the answer is of course it isn't. Murder is the intentional, unjustified taking of an innocent human life. In the case of a court imposed death sentence, the condemned is neither innocent nor is the act unjustified.

True Christians do observe the Sabbath but when Christ was resurrected it was a Sunday, so the definition of sabbath was shifted to mean Saturday night to Sunday night.

As for the bible contradicting itself... In the old testament the religion was also the law and breaking the law of God was a very serious crime. Also, the old testament gives a very strict view and the the people it is relating stories of were really stupid sometimes and had to be told exactly what they were and were not allowed to do (they had been slaves a long time and weren't used to thinking for themselves.) Putting to death was a legal execution, not murder. You didn't kill someone because they were breaking the sabbath, they were brought before judges and tried. The new testament is a kinder view because the people had learned to think for themselves but had a tendency to observe the letter of the law and ignore the spirit of the law.

A careful study of the sabbath day will reveal that this day was given to the Jews only to celebrate their rescue from slavery. God told them only to observe this day. Christians are not bound by the Mosaic law which the sabbath day was a part of. However, all the other 9 commandments were given for Christians to keep in the New Testament. Hope this helps you.

The Biblical meaning of Sabbath was to keep the seventh day holy, that is where saturday in many other languages gets its name. e.g. : Spanish: Sabado.
Most Christians, mainline Christians do observe the sabath but it extends from Saturday at sundown untill Sunday at sundown, this is the seventh day that is supposed to be kept holy and given to God. However many and many Christians don't actually keep it the way it's supposed to be not because that's what the church teaches but because that' s what their personal counsel and opinion is.

We celebrate it like that because the early Christians chose it to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus which occured on Sunday. But at the same time not renouncing to leave the saturday out of it, now the seventh day included sunday as well.

asto the put to death thing. In the old Mossaic law, those who infringed it were stoned, but not the sabath law, only the adultery law. But we are realeased from the hard observances of the law of Moses by the Sacrifice of Christ in the cross. We are free from them, although now the law for us is somehwat r=harder because instead of being one of external manifestation is one that is kept in the heart! A new commandment I give you: Love one another just as I have loved you, said Xp.

Ok, Bye

That is the old law, Jesus changed everything, it is to be holy, think of the answer that Jesus gave a Pharissee that tried to catch him, he asked if it was forbidden to heal someone of a sabbath, Jesus told him that if your cow was stuck in the mud in a ditch would you not get him out. that is not the true word for word but it means that good works can be done all the time it still means that the sabbath should be holy, work of good deeds is ok. Read what Jesus said about Moses law in Matthew thru Luke.

Those commandments were for God's chosen children of Israel. I guess its only OK to kill someone if God says to do so out of 'justice' instead of evil, or passion, etc. If you don't believe it, then I wouldn't spend too much time pondering over it.

Jesus said we don't have to follow all of God's silly Old Testament laws. Good Christians get to pick and choose which ones to follow.

Popular Christian behavior has nothing to do with what's said in the bible, especially if it's something the christian did not pick and choose to follow.
