Moses wife, Tzipporah (Sepphora) was the daughter of Jethro, a priest and chief of the Midianites who occupied the region of what is now northwest Saudi Arabia and eastern Sinai. There is a verse where Tzipporah is described derogatively as a Cuthean or Cushite, commonly understood to mean Ethiopian, and is the source of this understanding. However, in the language of the Torah, the term Cuthean can also refer to someone who is a negative spiritual influence, not referring to skin color at all. Suffice it to say, however, it is likely that the peoples of that region were darker skinned than European or American Jews.

Jethro and his family lived in Midian. People in that area generally are somewhat darker than those from Babylon (where Abraham came from)
