We've had some success with laying plexiglass over the wire shelves, but are there other ideas that are cheap and attractive?

The inexpensive solution is card board. You can use it plain or stick colorful drawer paper on it, or spray paint it. Polk holes in the ends and use twist ties to secure it to your wire shelves. Or plywood works too, but you may have to cut it.

Those "Closet Maid" rubber coated wire shelves leave a lot to be desired in the stability category. I have found that if you find your wall studs and place the 45° braces on the studs, they will hold a lot more weight. I have had them fall in 2 closets, so I reinstalled them using 2" wood screws every 16" (on the wall studs). The other option is just to replace them with standard "L" shaped braces along the wall (at the studs) and 1"x2" strips at the edges and 1" x 12" planks for the shelves. You would be surpised how easy and cheap that is if you have a drill/driver.

they sell wood slats at homedepot that you can connect and lay over the wire shelves. If you are handy you might just get a piece of thin MDF and cut it down to size. You could paint the MDF a pretty color or stain and seal it.

Buy a bunch of the plastic storage baskets that are inexpensive. You find them in walmart or the Dollar stores. You could get different colors for different items. Or get all one color. You can easily pull them out and wash them if they get dirty.
