does it have to do with discrimination of obese people and the "thin is beautiful" notion?

Well actually, not only ''thin is beatiful'', but thin is healthy and thin is a longer life.
In nature, here is no thin or obese , there is just ''is''. An elephant is a natural big animal,it is not an obese animal , and so is the hippo.But there was no human-elephant that nature made,only thousands of elephants that our civilisation made so perfectly.
So, society makes you fat ,and then rejects you when you are fat.
Be yourself means be as nature made you and then you ll have all what you want.

people like to copy celebrities
they see the diet advertised on tv etc
popular books about it
friends say they did it and lost weight.
lots of social factors.
