The god concept existed before religions. Religions came about when people started trying to use the god concept to sucker everyone else.

Try to feel the full impact of the question "if there was no God ?"
Maybe you will discover that you would like to live happily and give that space to others too. There would be no void.

i think even before organized religion there has been a concept of a higher power... they believed every thing had a spirit...its what keeps us going and gives us a purpose in life
