I think it is something that Wetsern folk would love to take out of context as an excuse, just as people always seem to misinterpret Horace's "Carpe Diem." Horace's intention was never hedonistic.....

If I may approach the religion perspective from the Christian biblical side, Jesus said, "We are clean through the word He has spoken to us. John 15:3". The scribes and pharisees of Jesus' day were people of prominence but He spoke to them about an inward cleanness, "cleanse that which is within that the outside may be clean also, Matthew 23:26". A common expression is, "cleanliness is next to Godliness. If Godliness has a high priority in a person's life, cleanliness will most likely follow.

The Zealots named Essenes, part of which became the Christians, believed in ritual bathing. The baths are still at their camps near the Dead Sea today. They also believed in honoring a guest by washing the feet.

Cleanliness is next to Godliness is an old wives' tale.

God does expect us to give our best in all we do. The Bible says to do everything as if you were doing it for Jesus. Meaning to do the best that you can in all you do.

I believe it is foolishness. True religion is concerned with everything that is important. Certainly cleanliness is important. True religion sees everything in its proper place and importance, and is not obsessed by anything.

I think Jesus said about the same thing to the Pharisees, who were always washing their hands and putting a great amount of money into the temple coffers, but He said their insides were like 'dead men's bones'.. which was more literally effect.

Certainly not with the obsessive part of it.
But when you are really honest and pure within something of it will be visible outwardly too. What is precious we tend to guard in a beautiful space.

"You Pharisees and teachers are show-offs, and you're in for trouble! You wash the outside of your cups and dishes, while inside there is nothing but greed and selfishness. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of a cup, and then the outside will also be clean. You Pharisees and teachers are in for trouble! You're like tombs that have been whitewashed. On the outside they are beautiful, but inside they are full of bones and filth. That's what you are like. Outside you look good, but inside you are evil and only pretend to be good."
