i don't know the figures but i do know that the income from tax on ciggies far, far outweighs the cost of smoking related illnesses to the NHS. also that smokers are 50% less likely to live long enough to collect their pension that non-smokers. now thats scary!

I agree in part with gingers answer about the tax is more than the cost of illness costs to the NHS but as for the not living to collect the state pension I would disagree as with many diseases smoking may or may not be a factor towards the death of someone if combined with the fact that the person smoked. But to me it is trying to impose the blame on the easy option. But you also have to consider the number of people living long and healthy lives and have smoked a good chunk of those years.

I worked this out ages ago based on figures from the government about how much smokers cost the NHS and considering the fact that the government gets £4.30 tax on a £5 pack of cigs they get more from tax than they pay out on treatment.
They always forget to leave that part out.

They have been blaming asthma in children and adults on smoking for years, and its now been proved in America its all down to pollution from cars, cigarette smoke has little effect on it.

Traffic fumes from motorways can seriously impair the lung development of children, new research suggests.

A large-scale study in California found that 10-year-olds who lived within 500 metres of a motorway suffered a "substantial" loss of lung function by the age of 18.

The effect became less the further away a child lived from the road.

A similar impact was seen on both boys and girls, and there was little influence from social background, other pollution sources, or exposure to tobacco smoke.

Between the ages of 10 and 18, a period of rapid lung growth occurs. This can be assessed with tests which measure the amount of air a child can blow into a tube.

The scientists carried out annual lung function tests on 3,677 Californian children for eight years.

Those living at least 1,500 metres from a major road were used as a baseline. Compared with them, children living closer to motorways had less "puff" at the age of 18.

The researchers, led by Dr James Gauderman, from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, reported in The Lancet medical journal: "Pronounced deficits in attained lung function at age 18 years were recorded for those living within 500 metres of a freeway."

For one test, their average performance was 3% lower than that of the baseline children. Another test showed an almost 7% reduction, but individual children had deficits of up to 10%.

The scientists said their findings pointed to diesel pollution as being a prime culprit.

Smoke related illness cost very little actually.. those patients usually die at a younger age... hence little cost.. its the old farts that wanna live forever that cost..

Tax? Alot.. prob at least 150% of the tobacco cost.. depends on the state..

I dont pay tax I'm exempt by law.. (yes there is a way.. i'm native here you arent) I'm tax exempt by way of state and fed income) too by way of govt retirement (thanx tax payers i appreciate it) which has nothing to do with the Jenkins act which has to do with this subject... Only taxs I pay are sales tax at the counter...

and its all legal..

I don't know but i must say it makes me sick to think that smokers are penalised (what about drinkers who every weekend cost the NHS) while the government are more than happy to rake the money in it from tobacco!!!
