Why does the term "The birds and the bees" Refer to sex?

Goes back to Victorian days, when sex was not a word to discuss. Birds and bees- have you ever seen them mate? Still they do it. Unlike most animals we may see mate here and there.

might have something to do with sex just being a part of nature? or could be from the song, "birds do it, bees do it, even educated fleas do it. lets do it, lets fall in love..." ;p
