Eternity is not pointless and though the planet is forever our civilization as we know it is not. We are not irrelevant and certainly not forgotten in 200 times 200 years - we will still be an active life with meaning and purpose.

You don't think they'll be talking about Einstein in 200 years? Or Aristotle? Or the Beatles even?

If you strive to make your life great and contribute to the human race good ideas and strategies to further mankind's contribution to the Earth, you can't be forgotten.

People won't remember you, you're right. They'll only remember what you did while you were here. So, pointless, not even a little bit. Unless of course you decide to be a waste of oxygen and don't do anything with your potential.

So far no one has come back and told us what happens after death. Your life cannot be totally meaningless and without purpose. For a start two people wanted you so you were born and I bet you have helped someone along the way so it is worthwhile.

if we see us as just mortal bodies and souls, then yes - death make the life worthless. but if you truly love somebody then your life can have meaning. therefore compassion and love are the meaning.
when you die you lose your human body. if, while you are alive, you find your purpose in love, compassion and good deeds, then your life is worth living.
let me give you example: you bought a new TV. As long as it gives good picture and sound, it serves the purpose. One day it will be old and new TV will be made - but the TV has done its job. or you buy new car - it can do it job properly.
so, nobody wants from you to be equal to next generation of people. You only have to make the best of your brain, body and life and when you have lived worthy life of service to others, you can go to your rest without any worry.
death makes life worthless if you have spared all your life in worthless pleasures and amusements. If you think always about death, you can eliminate fear of death by making worthy deeds and leading life full of meaning. then death will have no meaning.

If I tell you to climb to the top of a mountain, where you will find a single flower, and tell you to bring me that flower, but that once you reach the bottom of the mountain again, you will die, will your live and death have been meaningful?

If I now tell you that that one flower will be the symbol of hope and freedom for millions, does it make your life and death any more meaningful?

We make our own meaning. Life and death are ours to make meaningful. Do not look to the universe or to others to make your meaning -- make it for yourself.

(Many thanks to J. Michael Straczynski, creator of Babylon 5, from which this story is drawn. It is a Minbari morality tale told by Turval to Rastenn in Episode 506, Learning Curve, when Rastenn had abandoned Tanier in a noble fight for fear of their deaths being meaningless)

not all of us will be forgotten.. cant you remember anyone from over 200 years ago? do you think you would have existed if there was no one around 200 years ago? life would be much more pointless if we lived forever.. then wed just hang around wondering what to do with all our time.

cool question tho ;)

No! Death is just being born into the afterlife. It is the goal of our lives, the point to which we are all working. We develop spiritual qualities and virtues in this life in order to progress and develop in the afterlife.

Besides this, we are each supposed to make a positive contribution to the civilization of this planet, whether our names are remembered or not. We can also raise children and teach them to live good lives. This is a tremendously positive contribution whose effects are never-ending and eternal.

No. I don't think that it makes our lives meaningless.

The meaning is supplied by ourselves.

"This is the one true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances, complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.

I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can.

I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no `brief candle' to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations."

You can make a difference.

Your life is only pointless if you believe it is. FIND a purpose. GIVE it meaning.

Ignore the religious answers...
