I want to find black and white photos online of england (big ben and such), and I want to print them off onto special glossy paper. Now, I want them to look white and grey, you kow the look, not BLACK but ...greyish and white. I am having a hard time explaining. So would I look for those online and stay away from all color photos or could i find color and then print them in black and white?

IActually, I have Photoshop Elements. You can simply remove all color by hitting [SHIFT]+[CTRL]+[U] and you will get a black and white image. I prefer not to do it this way, however. If you just hit [CTRL]+[U], you will get the Hue/Saturation adjustment screen. From this screen, you can cut all colors but the one you choose to favor to -100 and then take the Master saturation down to something like -80 until you get the desired effect. This will leave the bare slightest trace of a color in your picture and this is so much more interesting than actual black and white. When I was printing photos, I used to choose one paper or another for the native color of the paper. If I wanted stark black and white, there was an Agfa paper that was pretty good. Most other papers seemed to color the image somewhat in much the same way as Kodachrome made things more saturated and red while Ektachrome made things cooler and blue.

Adobe must have heard from other users, because Photoshop Elements 5.0 has a new feature that lets you do exactly what I used to do with the Hue/Saturation tools. Under the "Enhance" menu, there is an item called "Convert to Black and White." If you open up this menu, you will see a screen with eight samples of your image. The samples show more red, less red, more green, less green, more blue, less blue, more contrast and less contrast. You can adjust the intensity of the effect and there you go. They also offer presets for portrait, vivid landscape, scenic landscape, urban/snapshots, newspaper or infrared effect.

Once you have seen the final result, you will not be satisfied with plain old black and white from your digital photos. The desaturation technique for older versions of P.E. and the "Convert to Black and White" in P.E. 5.0 make much more realistic B&W prints, if that makes any sense at all. Like I said, you never really saw ACTUAL black and white prints from a darkroom anyhow and this copies that effect.

You are right. Black is not black. Tricks, ink paper and theory is required to have a black really black *remember the song... black is black... not anymore!

In commercial printing, if you add 40% Cyan (yellow) to black... then you have almost a nice black, wich is called @ricjh Black@ by lithographers.

There is even a ultra black, 60C, 55M, 50Y, 100K formula (265 total), and even a formulation of 70C, 60M, 60M, 100K (290 total)... so black is a very relative matter.

IT should mean absence of color... but its so possible when printing? no...... light is always there to some extend.

Worse. if you have a 3 color ink catridge and do a n image print, if the primter does not uise a black cartridge then a brown black is all you get... uFFFF!

Getting an absolute black means nothing. So the new definition of black for printing shoud read :
BLACK IS THE DARKEST TONE YOUR PAPER CAN ACHIEVE OR RENDER.

If you have a chance, try printing in a multi black toner printer, Quad Printing for example, uses four black inks with intensities of
100%, 75%, 50% and 25% instead of the standard black, cyan, yellow and magenta inks. That solves the unrealistic gray and black tones on common printers. So... you are no crazy.. you are perfectly right when blacks bothers you.

Same with inks and papers. try a hi grade black set of inks and maybe some selenium based paper or so.

///This black philosophy problems happens at any label and activity. For example, last november, the University of Rochester created a hi intensity laser to produce what its called a gold black tah substitutes painting with the laser burning metal. Also, the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Teddington, West London, presented last year the "blackest ever" surface developed untill now. Some call it "black velvet". You pay about us$800 for a 2 square inch coverage of this black!

/////
Regarding using color pictures and having them translated into black and white.. yes this is a fairy simple process for applications like Photoshop. Your images will look so radiant, but you will find out that some will be more richier in color, not all....

My screen will go black if I extend this writing anymore *and the readers will surely have a reddish color that would require plenty of Photoshop' s color desaturation.

Well, you can do a search on google images and find several pictures. Save them to your computer by right click. Then, draw up an image program (I used to use Jasc. It has to be installed, but it's free) and use threshold. What you are talking about is threshold. It will make the image just black and white.
