Growing up I had this strange phobia of buttons (don’t laugh at me!), just the thought of wearing clothing that had buttons would cause my skin to crawl and make me cry. My 2yr old son seems to have the same problem with zippers! He cries, screams and vomits when I attempt to put him in pants that zip. He yells "No zippers Mama!"

Phobias develop from a traumatic experience, bear in mind that "traumatic" is a highly personally decided. Perhaps your son caught his skin in a zipper, and has formed a fear of them. Perhaps you at a very early age couldn't undo a button and developed a fear because of this. The best way to help him overcome the fear is to make it a good experience. Find toys with zippers and let him learn how to use them. Reward him enthusiastically for even trying.

Phobias are learnt. Nobody is born with them. I most cases, I think a traumatic event may be the trigger, or there could be a genetic susceptability.
