new user need help with mac?

hi all i am a new new user to mac and i am so lost. i have always been a windows user. i was wondering what is a .dmg file? i tried to download windows media player for mac which is a .stix program and it wont open. when i click on it it says: there is no default application specified to open the document. i am currently using mac os x. any help would be much appreciacted all. thx in advance!

A .sitx file is a stuffed file.
You need stuffit expander to unstuff it, and then be able to load, and use the program.
