I think it is depending the performance of your computer.
If it is just focusing on the software itself, I believe Windows XP is better than Vista now. Since MS engineer does have more experience and the customer's feedback on using Windows XP.
However, if we consider it at a longer time, Vista should be better than XP in the future. Since, we can cover the weakness of the Vista by the Windows update, and Vista is still the upgrade version of XP. :)

Definately XP! SP3 is exceptionally strong, Vista nonetheless shakey and an astounding memory and CPU HOG !! Vista WONT enable ya downgrade yet ya can (I actually have) 'chew the bullet' and use a freeware format/parttion manager (attempt CPM (attractive Partition Mgr) and then boot XP off CD and reinstall... you would possibly want to/could have some 'lacking motive force' issues, yet as long as have yet another computer on the internet then which will be resolved with some hours sweat... --Smuxman--

Windows Vista is better, especially Windows Vista Ultimate. Games will eventually look better than Any xbox but the video cards that support all that cost around $800 AUD. Make sure your video card support Direct x 10.

XP Pro. Vista is still to unstable and buggy. I would not count on Vista till the first service pack comes out. IMHO

Normally the answers for such questions are it depends on your PC usage.
Vista is a new OS and has lots of enhancement over XP which includes price also. If you don't have a price issue go for vista. If price is a concern then stick to it till it fulfills your purpose.
