The best thing is to check with your own doctor since they know you well enough to know what would be healthiest for you.
One basic healthy "diet" to follow is check out the diet and meal plans for a diabetic, even if you are not one.
You will find you will eat more food than you are used to but lose weight due to eating better foods, lower your sugar and starch intake yet not eliminating which is not healthy.
This will increase your fruit and veggies but the vitamin benefits from that is also an energy boost plus.
While getting some exercise is helpful, if you don't have time or the drive to stick to an exercise program try something really simple, if you live in a house take a walk around you house, just the perimiter of your house then you are not doing much but you are helping to burn the calories from the meal you just ate and boosting your metabolism.
Never skip breakfast, even if you don't each much or are like me can't seem to eat breakfast at all, then at least have a piece of fruit, or toast, or keep a box of grahm crackers on hand and grap a couple.
During the night your body is at rest you are not burning the calories but the time between dinner and breakfast is the longest without foods so that if you skip breakfast your body will protect itself by slowing the metabolism down, and causing you to store more fats and calories the next time you do eat.
Sometimes for some people just making sure they eat something, anything in the morning can make all the difference.
Also about half hour to hour before going to bed try eating some nuts, peanuts, cashews just a small amount. Many nuts are healthy if they are not loaded down with heavy salt, and can increase your metabolism.
There is a lot of talk about trans fats in foods, so read the labels, any foods with to many trans fats, or starches or sugars will hinder you.
Be careful about so called diet, and fat free foods, often the chemicals in fat free foods to make them taste better can be more fattening than the non-fat free foods.
It is important to know your own body since not every one is the same for instance I don't use product with nutrasweet in them.
And give yourself a day or time will you will indulge yourself a little. Not go over board but let yourself have something you really want even if it is a sweet, it is hardest to stick to a healthy diet when you are completely denying yourself the foods you want.
This one may sound odd, but if you have a sit down job, where you spend most of your day at a desk then every so often get up stretch and yawn. It helps work out any kinks you might be developing, it gets your body moving even only a small bit, and it also releaves the stress and tension from sitting at the desk.
Tension can make you gain weight.
It is important to also get a good nights sleep. Many people do not realize that just getting a good nights sleep can prevent them from gaining weight.

To lose weight you have to use more calories then you consume. So a combination of eating less calories and exercising is best. It is actually more difficult to exercise to lose all the weight because of the amount of exercise required to burn a calorie. But you still want to exercise to burn fat. Do cardio 3 or 4 days a week at a pace that you can speak but it is slightly challenging. Also do weights 2 or 3 days a week. Once you get to your size you wish to maintain lower the cardio down a day or two, and if at that time you wish to tone up more add another day of strength training.

I was about 160 pounds and i needed to lose weight and the best thing that worked for me was to completly cut out fast food and soda for good!! The minute i stopped doing that i dropped about 25 pounds without even exersizing! Then after i realized i was at a stand still i cut out eating a lot of junk food and started doing like 45min worth of pilates( not very hard to do) And its been maybe about 2yrs and i am now 125. Just cut out junk, fast food, soda, and exersize a little amount almost every day and you should be good to go :)

Eat several (5-6) small meals a day...your body will burn calories faster and build your metabolism in a short period of time.
(eat about every 2 hours)
The first 8-10 pounds you shed is water...after that you will lose an average of 2 - 3 lbs per week
Meal suggestions:
piece of fruit
string cheese, summer sausage, cottage cheese/yogurt
tuna/turkey/ham sandwich (lettuce, tomatoe optional)
soup
raw veggies
boiled eggs
popcorn
Always eat a good dinner...meat, potatoes/pasta/rice, veggie...your body needs carbs, protein and vitamins to stay healthy
Low calorie sweets...ginger snaps, fig bars, 100% juice popsicles
Drink plenty of water
Drink milk or juice/water with every meal (no soda pop)
Stay away from munchies, fried & fatty foods (no fast-food)
Never eat before going to bed.
Cardio exercise is great, but most people don't continue for an extended period, do "daily" simple exercise like walking/hiking, biking and swimming which are low impact, play games like basketball, baseball, or volleyball, they will help to lose weight, tone your body, make new friends and you have fun doing it.
