I wouldn't worry about it too much at 14 months. The dental structure really doesn't start to take shape until about 4-5 years, in preparation for the adult teeth, and unfortunately, some kids have crooked sockets to begin with.

However if you want to break the habit the best way is to put something on it that tastes bad (there are products specifically for this purpose), that way the child will learn that sucking the thumb is a bad experience and won't associate that bad experience with you (otherwise she'll learn to do it when you're not looking, or do it for your attention). If the thumb tastes bad, she'll break the habit in a hurry, whether you're watching her or not.

There are products that you can put on her thumb that will make it taste bad. Go to the pharmacy and ask about them. Or ask your pediatrician what to do. I never had that problem with my children, but my friend did. She said she put a bandage on the thumb to discourage her daughter from sucking it. May be worth a try. It is a habit and you just need to find the right way to change the habit. Good luck.

My 18 month old sucks her thumb. I have done a lot of research and have worried about it a lot too! At first I would just take it out of her mouth for her. Then I tried to put a mitten on it, she DID NOT like that! :) She has become very good at following directions lately. So my recent efforts have been to say, "Take your thumb out of your mouth honey!" And she will take it out, for a while. They say distraction works well too. Things like "thum" has chemicals in it that are not good for babies. As far as teeth go, I think you don't have to be concerned until her adult teeth come in. My daughter has a mouth full. Good luck, from one mother to another!

I'm afraid you might have to get her a pacifier. A pacifier does not make the teeth skew where as sucking her thumb definitely will. Children usually discontinue using a dummy at the age of three (they will throw it away themselves thinking they are for babies). If she will swap the thumb for the pacifier go for it, you wont be sorry.

If her teeth are coming out crooked it's because of GENETICS not her thumb. I sucked my fingers for years, never had crooked teeth, my dental problems stemed from lack of floride, lack of calcium (mom wasn't big on milk) and overabundance of antibiotics for constant ear infections. I never wore braces, my sister sucked her fingers, never wore braces. We do have a tendancy to have an "overbite" but that is caused by the fact that our upper jaws come to a point (my mother's did, my maternal grandmother's did) and not from sucking our fingers.

do not pay interest to human beings taht say it would not damage them, because it does. My daughter is 5 and we were advised about 5 months in the past by technique of the dentist that if she would not end sucking her thumb, they could ought to placed an equipment contained in the roof of her mouth which will poke her thumb. at the same time as she sucks her thumb, it pushes up on the roof of her mouth and that's making her higher jaw very narrow. She has tried preventing, yet I in certain circumstances capture her with it in her mouth at the same time as she's drowsing and that i imagine she's discovered to conceal at the same time as doing it otherwise. We bypass decrease back to the dentist next month and that i imagine the using will finally end up in her mouth. Eeeek. So, a thanks to end - properly, you should purchase the undesirable tasting nail polish, which will artwork till they comprehend that they could peal it off. Then it would not do any strong. you may placed warm sauce on her finger, yet she'll probable get use to it exceptionally instantly. i wager my suggestion might want to be to take her to a dentist and word if that's honestly causing any issues. no longer all thumb sucking deforms tooth/jaw. It really relies upon on the attitude of their thumb. If she isn't pushing up on the roof of her mouth and out on her the front tooth (which the dentist will recognize) then it will be advantageous to easily enable her strengthen out of it.

thats hard! its going to be tricky. Try pulling out her thumb and distracting her with something else as much as you can. Its a tough habit to break, because it isnt like you can take away her thumb! Just pull out the thumb as much as you can and hopefully that will help.
