Alto is a very small car and hence very easy to drive even in a crowded city, but because it is very small and very light it is unsuitable for long drives (especially on the highway) with 4 people in it.

The Xeta has much more space, power and a much better suspension at about the same price as an Alto (which is priced high because Maruti knows people will buy it anyway). But the Xeta is a litle harder to drive for beginners as the car is large (bigger interiors than an esteem), but even this like anything else, is simply a matter of practice. So I would outright recommend the Xeta, especially the GLG version.

Since you will use the vehicle for outings, in my opinion Indica Xeta is the better option as it is more spacious than the Alto. The price of both the cars is around 3 lakh ( in Delhi ). Running cost will be slightly lower for Alto. The handling of Indica is better on highways and its higher ground clearance and sturdy body gives it an edge over Alto.

i recently purchased Indica GVS 1.2, great car for a great price. My alternate choice was alto before going
for this one...i have driven 1300 kms till now, the vehicle is good and i came to this selection after reading reviews in mouth shut. the mileage i get is around 16 in highways with ac and 11-12 in city with ac...good car for long drives and can easily accomodate a family of 5 ....also the engine is smooth and silent inside giving a peaceful ride..this is a good luxury budget car... there are few pros and cons

pros:

great space
great comfort
good interiors
decent pick up and speed
great vehicle for a family especially during long drive

cons :
Fit and finish is poor ( can see uneven gaps)
ac is average during a sunny day travel ( not like alto)
power steering is bit hard
reverse gear is hard ( hope it gets better after first service)

any car is the same in driving conditions in india . the driving test is the dummest in the world and besides there r a lot of people in india.
However i think alto is better as it is small and tata has the worst quality and customer service.
