I had that feeling too when my dad died. I just attributed it to my heart being broke. There is so much love and bond there that a piece of it is taken when someone close to you passes away.

Yes, it is a horrible pain. Divorce causes it too. I tend to believe it has to do more than heart muscles getting tight. I read a study that said that their is a chemical released in our tears that is found in Cancer. So researcher believe it is extremely healthy for us to cry and get it all out. I think the pain comes from the bond being broken. The love you have for the person and is now broken overwhelms you.
Hang in there if that is what you are going through. You will make it through. Cry a good cry.

I was watching a documentary ages ago on organ transplantation and the idea of a brain in the heart was discussed. Apparently there is some scientific evidence that the heart holds memory and the new owner of a heart sees some change in their behaviour that related to the old owner.

If a heart can keep memory of activity and hobbies it could possibly hold things like love so physically react to circumstances such as death and heartbreak.

Interesting idea!

You could have strained muscles or caused some minor trauma from excessive crying in the chest area that can cause "heartache".

Susan I am sorry to hear of your pain....I do believe its anxiety....when my father in law passed in may, I often felt that tight feeling and sever pain almost like a heart attack, and can also feel as though you are dying....I would talk to your doctor, mine prescribed a mild anti anxiety med for a short time.

It could be the begining of a light panic attack. You should try to talk to someone about your feelings and do something that makes you feel relaxed. I hope everything gets better.

Probably severe stress. When you undergo any kind of severe mental stress it affects your body - causing it pain, etc. This would include the anguish of losing someone close to you in death.

In my opinion, I believe that we are probably tensing up our muscles...Sometimes your breathing becomes shallow when you're upset and it'll cause your chest to ache...
