Social responsibilty- engineers?

I have to write an essay on how Engineers can be of social responsobilty?

i.e. what can they do to serve the ppl better??
any ideas?

Here's an idea!!

As an engineer, my responsibility to design projects that will be safe, technically accurate, have a long service life and be affordable to build.

It is not my responsibility to end poverty, homelessness or any other social ill.

I take offense to this question. Engineers are not peons, who have to serve "the people".

Engineers need to ensure that the designs they come up with are safe, and easy to use. Bridges will not fly apart, buildings can withstand more that local building codes allow, electronic equipment will not short out and electrocute people.
