Since I own a Sony I keep my photos on computer via their software cybershot. Reason being when rt clicking it under properties it shows time and date photo taken, shutter speed, aperture, what ISO, image size, etc...but when it comes to focal length I'm confused. I took a distant shot and focal lengh shows 11.7 mm I figure in terms of 35mm it should show more like 300mm. Is there any comparison chart to go by?

Sounds like you have a point and shoot camera. What is the total zoom optical zoom 3x?

Look by the lens of the camera. You will find the focal length min-max of the camera. Usually something like 3.9-11.7mm. The sensor is much smaller on a point and shoot camera. The larger of the two numbers is the focal length at full zoom. It depends on the size of your sensor as to what the 35mm equivalent is.

If you used digital zoom on top of the optical zoom, you would have gotten 6x (the properties may or may not show if digital zoom was used).

Check out the following question for a great detailed explanation.

The focal length is proportional to the size of the size of the sensor. In film cameras, that was usually 24x36mm, so we came to expect focal lengths that correspond to that size. However, this consistency is gone with digital cameras, where each camera design might use a different sized CCD (this is also why most digital cameras don't have interchangeable lenses).

This problem is not new; if you look at the specifications of a large format film camera you will note the focal length is much, much longer than you'd expect. The larger the film, the longer the focal length.

If you wanted to figure out equivalent values, you could set up a tripod with various objects in view. Place your 35mm camera on the tripod and note which objects are visible at a given focal length. Then take identical pictures with your digital camera and compare the values.

out of your historic previous, do you keep in mind something called APS sized movie? you recognize, the smallest extensively accessible movie sort. nicely, it is quite plenty what your "present day" digital camera is. purely multiply in spite of lens you presently have by way of a million.6 and this may well be the hot focal length.
