I know it's sort of a lame question, but my wife would be upset if I weren't sure. I'd like to go to Bali for a couple of days to surf and would like to be able to assure my wife that there's no problem. I am quick to take the point of view that the terrorist risk is high in New York too, so what's the problem. But I guess it doesn't hurt to ask. Thanks for the advice!

Well I guess the first thing to say is that bad stuff can happen anywhere, however, I lived in Indonesia until December 2006 and never felt anything other than safe. The people can be a little annoying in Bali but not in a way that is dangerous.
Really you'd be as fine there as you would anywhere in the world. If you wanted to be super paranoid you could avoid the really up-market resorts and restaurants but if your going for surfing you probably wouldn't be hanging around these anyway.
You'll have a great time.
