If you get seriously into the hobby, you'll spend about as much as you would on microbrew beers at a store or pub. However, you'll never beat the price of cheap mass-produced swill like Bud or Coors and the like...you can't compete with that kind of bulk production on an at-home scale. You *can* blow them away quality-wise, however...very easily.

As long as you can pay attention to detail in keeping all supplies properly sanitized, and have the patience to let it all ferment thoroughly, then it's not hard, just finicky.

I received a beer making kit as a gift last year. I followed the directions exactly. When all was said and done the beer was every bit as good as (if not better than) anything I have purchased in a store. Since I don't drink very much, I gave much of it away and everyone who tried it was impressed. There was actually very little labor involved, but a lot of waiting. The most important part is to make sure that everything is clean. If there is any contamination the brew will be undrinkable. I recommend going to a local beer making supply store to get advice. I did and they answered several important questions for me. All in all it was a lot of fun. Good luck!

Don't start! If you do then well.... welcome to the dark side :) Many of us who brew our own beer do it because we really enjoy it. Both the brewing and drinking. If you think you will save money by homebrewing - think again. I haven't met 1 person who's saved money by homebrewing. It's a hobby and can be a money sink. Now don't get me wrong, you CAN save money by homebrewing by doing things on the cheap but just like any obsession you probably wont.

I highly recommend searching for a local homebrew club in your area. It's a great chance to talk to the homebrewers, see what they do, and get an idea before you make the plunge. Homebrewers are a great bunch of people and all I've met are eager to share the fruits of thier labor.

As Herding says , there are kits you can purchase , and this simplifies the procedure allot. These kits are getting better (as far as flavor goes) all the time. The cheaper the kit the worse the flavor , I have found. It is still cheaper and more enjoyable than buying the same volume of beer.

I have been brewing fo 20 + years.

There are kits you can purchase in stores or over the Internet but I have never done it, so I don't know how good the beer is.
