To me, being spiritual is to be aware of my mind's nature, without distraction.. Addiction is a distraction, a major one.. I know that people can gain wisdom from various ranges of experiences, like when I quit smoking cigarettes due to having a more motivational goal.. But I really think alcohol can do the opposite oh helping spiritual development. I would not recommend you to indulge in drinking because you think there's insight from it... There's more ability to have insight when your brain isn't under an influence..

Perhaps your friend writes great poems all the time but is too shy to show it without alcohol. Lots of artists and singers use drugs to let go of their self consciousness before displaying their craft.
As for being insightful...again it probably has to do with being able to open up over some booze rather than anything else.
So I don’t think it has anything to do with spirituality. But here’s hoping there is a bar in the sky. :p

the old testament clearly says that KINGs and priests should not give themselves to wine or strong drink because it perverts judgments. the new testament always says for people to remain sober. it even declares that strong drink is raging.
So the weight of evidence is that you dont drink and be sober.
but in proverbs it clearly says that you let the poor man drink (beer) (niv), so that he may forget.
Some people beleive jesus drank wine, but he said he would drink NEW wine in the kingdom of god. does that mean its the same as good grape juice?

Many people worship porcelain gods after they have a lot to drink, so I don't see why not.
At least those gods can be proven.
