this is like a carpentry question.

You should always measure twice, then cut once.

If XP is doing what you need, don't change it.

Vista will probably require some hardware upgrades as well.

You should think twice. Windows Vista is stronger than Windows XP, and nicer, too. It also need more harddisk space (about 10 GB for it to run well), and more RAM, VGA...
My idea is that the Windows Vista run well in PC which have at least: 80GB Harddisk, 256MB VGA (PCI Express with the DAC higher than 400), CPU clock set equal to a Pentium 4 3Ghz or AthlonXP +6400, 2GB RAM. That's enough.
You should also think about the price of the Windows Vista. You will have to pay for it...
