I came to a pentecostal type church four years ago from the brethren (very strict, have to wear hats, women not allowed to speak in meetings) and I really want to speak in tongues because my boyfriend told me, it takes you on a different dimension with God...it would be an amazing way to worship. My pastor said that everybody should have tongues as its one of the small gifts...I want it but I don't have it so therefore its not one that God wants to give me, one that's not applicable to me...I'm just confused really...

The problem lies at the root of your foundation ie "Brethern" I was raised in this type of setting where everything has ceased and so on they taught. They taught me that tongues were off the devil even though they could not show this in the Bible. All this type of teaching creates fear which is the opposite of faith. When I came into the reality of God I sought "tongues" instead of the giver - the Holy Spirit. One day as I was relaxed in Him and was praying I noticed words that were not English coming through in my prayer worship. My immediate thoughts were is this the Holy Spirit - I remember smiling as I remembered what He said He (Holy Spirit) taught me that love is the centre of the Cross and that He would not gave me anything that would hurt me. I just let the words flow and it came like a river. Since that time I have spoke in several types of tongues.
Remember when you are born again you are born into a new realm which is spiritual - heaven becomes your home and if heaven is your home then what is the language of that country? Its your heavenly language. Christianity is not about endurance as it is not a religion it is an experience a walk in Jesus.

Tongues is only a language. Like Spanish, French, and so forth. It was used to witness to the lost if you will read Acts. The same meaning for tongues in Acts is the same meaning you will find in 1 Corinthians. Some say its a prayer language, if thats the case why does God need you to speak in a language different from the one you speak now. Tongues is not a sign saying you have the Holy Spirit. If that was the case then you are none of his. The word of God say if ye have not the Spirit you are none of his. If you are saved you got the Holy Spirit the day you was saved. Please study this and the word meanings so you will know this.

There are many gifts of the Spirit - speaking in tongues is only one of them. If you reference this in the new testament, 'tongues' usually refers to other languages (apart from one indirect instance where Paul refers to the tongue of angels).

Don't worry about it, your gift is obviously not tongues (it's not mine either and I'm happy about that!)

I do think that certain sections of the Pentecostal movement are unhealthily preoccupied with tongues. Paul does say that not all have the same gift.

God bless, Pete.

You can't "speak in tongues". No one can. The description of this gift in the Bible clearly means being able to speak to someone whose language you do not speak, and they are still able to understand you.

"Tongues" means languages, not the babbling you hear in a church. That is known as glossolalia, and it can be learned. Some people are better at it than others.

The first thing you need to do is to believe that you can speak in tongues. Every Christian is able to speak in tongues. Those who cannot, I believe, have spiritual blockages in them.

Mark 16:17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues. This scripture is proof that every believer can speak in tongues.

Luke 11:13 ‘If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!’ In this scripture Jesus is saying that our Father God is very willing to baptize anyone with the Holy Spirit if one asks Him.

John 7:39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. This scripture shows that the Holy Spirit is only given to believers when Jesus is glorified and for no other reason except this. The Holy Spirit is given to every believer as a matter of grace, as an unmerited and undeserved favor.

Acts 2:33 Therefore, being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear. This scripture confirms that when Jesus is glorified, when He goes to be with the Father, the Holy Spirit is poured out upon believers.

Acts 8:17-19 Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. Now when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostle’s hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, saying, ‘Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.' These scriptures show that the Holy Spirit is received through the laying of hands. To be baptize with the Holy Spirit you need someone who is full of Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues to lay hands on you to impart the Holy Spirit to you.

I pray that our Father gives you the faith to believe and receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit in you. Amen.

If you need the gift of tongues,
God will give them to you.

Until then,
Don't worry about it.
.
The Bible says there should be an interpreter and an interpretation for tongues spoken aloud in church.

I speak in tongues, yet have never asked for it. For the longest time, I was leery of it because I didn't know what it was (not going to church at the time). I only knew how I felt, and the only way I can describe it is pure emotion; joy, sorrow, regret. Afterwards is an indescribable peace. This is a gift from God. You can ask for it, you can pray for it, but it will only be given to those God chooses. Don't feel less than worthy; you will be blessed as God sees fit. Blessings

Sidenote; Don't seek after things just because others have them...ask God to bless you as He sees fit. You'll see a big difference when you take free will out of the equation ;)

What Pentecostals call "speaking in tongues" sounds like this to the rest of us :

It is my personal belief that pentecostals speak in tounges by their own volition. They get so wound up, and everyone is seizing on the floor babbling away that they just do too
