If you were to put an age restriction on The Bible what would it be and why?

2007-01-28 23:35:26 · 14 answers · asked by Rabble Rouser 4 in Society & Culture Religion & Spirituality

The reason I ask this question is because I asked a question on Yahoo! Answers about the story of Lot and his wife. The details of the story, which I quoted from the holy book apparently violated the 13 rating for content on Yahoo Answers and my question was deleted. If that one story was in violation of the 13 rating does it not mean that we have material out there in the hands of minors that could damage them?

There were a couple of good answers about content of the bible, and how there should be a rating because of content.

However, I would like to add... all those folks out there who point to the Harry Potter books to be banned because of the magic content and the witchcrafting... how many of you have actually read through the bible? There is plenty of magic in there. Shouldn't the bible be banned as well?

I am sure one of your great bible quoters who fills pages here with his chapter and verse material overlooks the parts with the magic... like Moses telling Aaron to throw down his staff, and it turns into a snake. Just one such example. What about water to wine? Oh, I'm sorry, that's a miracle... but for anyone else, it's magic?

Sorry, got into a rant. But does it make sense? I agree with the person who points out the violence, sex, discriminating against women, and more. There should be an age limit and it should apply to all, not just the chosen few, if we are to go this route.

It's an interesting and fair question. Although it would be all but impossible to impose such an age restriction, for deeply religious parents would simply loan their Bibles to their children or read to them from it.

I agree that there are sufficient amounts of violence, sexism, etc. in the Bible which might not be suitable for children of tender years to encounter. Perhaps it would be better if parents gave their kids books that explained pertinent parts of the Bible in child-like terms, but removed the "angry" influences. Then at a certain age, 11 or 12, allow kids to begin reading the Bible. At this point they are likely to see the influences in other areas of life, anyway, be it TV, the internet, video games, through their peers, etc.

The one paradox I would like to point out, is that parents wouldn't let their 7 year-old child watch R-rated movies (i.e. The Hitcher), yet they will allow their children to read R-rated material because it is in the "holy book". It should be balanced.

Well as soon as kids are old enough to know what they're being taught. They have Bible lessons and songs for kids, because most kids ain't gonna sit down and read the whole Bible on their own-even some adults think it's difficult.I don't know any kids I grew up with that read the Bible when very little-it's a thick book. I assume you're speaking of kids, after 18 you can read porno if you want and do it too.I wasn't interested in the Bible,no,I liked Myths and fanciful things, and classics when I was a child.

The Bible features strongly racist views, coupled with stories of homosexual activities, incest and rape. This, coupled with the celebration of slavery and the encouragement of all-out genocide means I think the Bible should definately have an age-restriction. If a book today was written that told you to stone your teenage son to death if they don't tidy their room, would you buy it?

The Bible is a dirty, violent, agressive book that highlights the ignorance of people thousands of years ago. It is a shame ANYONE would want to read it now, let alone build their faith on it.

So, I think the Bible should be banned completely.

sorry, i was looking at bible books and one particular type of bible when i was about 5. It had no influence on me at all, in fact i would describe myself as one who mightve become a satanist by the age of 14, but because i did read the bible at 15 or 16, i believed all the truth of my own study. instead of mocking God as all my freinds did because thats what they were taught to believe to do.
NO age restrictions are necessary.
what should be restricted is sorcery which is practiced by 5 years olds. personal witness on that Evil girl who was 5.

The worship of lucifer and all forms of witchcraft is still one of the greatest evils in this nation since the Salem witch trials. O BTW, there is no doubt that there was witchcraft, because they found the book with the 3 girls.

I wouldn't put an age restriction, I would put a life restriction.

All bibles should be in this supposed heaven.

Then people could read it if they get there.

But when they don't get there, as it doesn't exist, they won't have wasted their time.

There would never be a age resriction on the bible. If someone would not be able to read the bible it was be Jews, but the bible is for everyone.
