I think you need to go out and be around some different dogs to sorta get a feel of what you want. in my personal opinion, a golden retriever, chocolate lab, and on the small side a mini schnauzer. A dog is born with a personality already, but their owners/ friends also has alot to do with their temperament.
And it doesn't need to be a full blooded dog.. a mixed breed can also be a great dog...
I like the fact you ask other peoples opinion on this, but when you find your new best friend, whether its a big dog or a small dog you will know it.
i hope when you do find it you have many years of great friendship with it!

In my opinion a Pug is the greatest dog ever. We have had Collies, Dobbies, mutts, and beagles.

What makes the pug great is there is not a mean bone in their body. The only reason the dog was breed was for companionship. They are great with kids, older people and anyone else in general. They like to please and to entertain.

They are smart but this also comes with a stubborn streak which makes them at time hard to housetrain at times. However my dogs are house trainned so I can't complain about that.

If you want a true companion get a pug. They are a small dog, but they aren't yappy, or jumpy. There bark is deeper then most small dogs.

We also have no problems taking them anywhere. They go in our kayak, and go camping with us. They love it. They also enjoy it when we stay in hotels. They are a very flexible breed.

Collie. Super intelligent (will require lots of interaction). Friendly (you couldn't get mine to bite). Best looking (absolutely gorgeous). Most obedient (she does whatever I tell her but sometimes lets me know her disappointment with those big sad eyes). Don't worry about the coat. A good brushing everyday and groomer appointment every other month and they stay amazing.

I am a huge fan of boxers. They fit the bill.

Also good would be any of the retrievers. These dogs seem dead set on pleasing their people. You can actually see the distress in their little faces when they know they have disappointed or angered you.

As much as I love my boxers, I would vote for Goldens or Labs.

Good luck to you!

1) A shelter mutt..choose a FRIENDLY one and you'll have the most grateful friend..for life!

2)OBEDIENCE is created by you! Spend the time to train through patience and reward.

3)This is a tough one, but in general anything mixed with shepherd, poodle, lab, border collie, pinscher, tend to be bright, but really any dog and become "smart" with your time, p[patience and love!

Good luck to you!

Definitally an australian shepherd. (in any different case widespread by skill of utilising certainty the aussie) we've been given one from a rescue, and prefer a border collies, she loves agility, strolling, working etc.. yet! she could be waiting to instruct it off, and adjust spectacular right into a comfortable family canines together as she isn't out strolling. (in assessment to optimum border collies) they are medium sized (35-40lbs approximately). She gets alongside great with my different canines to boot. She is a candy coronary heart and especially intelligent and easy to tutor. SHe is easily-widely used with of optimum of tricks! time-honored, the breed is an athletic, clever, stable-tempered frizbee and tennis ball loving breed! i could particularly check out one if it particularly is what youre searching for!

Doberman with out a doubt. Have you ever seen a big strong boy standing to attention, gorgeous. Loves everyone if socialised properly. Loves food too especially treats, so is easy to train and are very eager to please. They also learn very quickly what not to do.
