They're not stupid. They have three main reasons.

They believe propaganda from the fossil fuel industry and the extreme right that information about global warming comes from biased environmentalists. They haven't researched it enough to know that this is a solid scientific consensus among all scientists.

They would rather deny that it's a real problem because if it was that would mean they'd have to make real changes in their lives. People do that about many things.

They have some financial interest in not believing. "It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his income depends upon him not understanding it."

Disbelief will go down slowly now that major Republican leaders like McCain and Bush, and many business leaders, are saying that it's real. But reasons 2 and 3 will still apply and cause some vocal opposition.

"The science of global warming is clear. We know enough to act now. We must act now."

James Rogers, CEO of Charlotte-based Duke Energy.

"Our nation has both an obligation and self-interest in facing head-on the serious environmental, economic and national security threat posed by global warming."

John McCain, Republican, Senator, Arizona

"These technologies will help us become better stewards of the environment - and they will help us to confront the serious challenge of global climate change."

President George Bush, Republican

If you want to be scientific about this discussion you should know there are no FACTS only THEORIES. According to the scientific method if general observation and experimentation support a postulate it is then a theory, never a fact.

As for global warming, I have no doubts that we are having an impact on global climate, it's impossible to exist and not impact your environment.

But that said, nobody living today has observed the climate for a long enough period to definitely say that all the climate changes observed are entirely attributable and directly related to the use of fossil fuels. There is evidence that the Earth has cooling and warming cycles that predate the existence on humankind, perhaps you've studied the ice ages?

I take a more moderate approach, I believe that limiting the use of fossil fuels certainly couldn't be bad for the environment and quite probably is affecting the global climate.

People are not stupid. At least not more stupid that you, on average. Just because people do not agree with you is no reason to call them stupid. There are facts you have not considered, such as how Greenland was warmer 1,000 years ago when the Vikings settled there, and how Greenland got colder, like it is now, too cold to support a local population, and those settlers all froze and starved centuries ago. And how much worse off the world would be if we suddenly gave up burning all that coal that keeps the the electricity on at the solar cell manufacturing factories and the oil that keeps the farm tractors running. And how much worse for us all a 5 degree cooling would be than a 5 degree warming.

This question is not very well worded. Calling people names is not going to help you get good answers.

Many people are mislead by the complicated nature of the science involved, and by the numerous claims by politicians and some energy corporations trying to cast doubt on the test and experiments. Those objections seem to be being weakened by the day.

Global Warming is a FACT.
The Question that you need to address is what is the cause of Global Warming.
I.E. is Global Warming caused by natural changes in the Earth and its climate or is it caused by mankind and its consumption of fossil fuels or is being speed-ed up by mankind.
If you wish to keep friends and influence people then you need
to grasp this concept clearly and to present your evidence in a
logical and scientific manner.

Most people are not stupid. But they are undereducated in science--and so don't know how to tell the difference between science and the misinformation put out by the fossil fuel industry, conspiracy theorists, and the anti-science religious fanatics.

But here's a hint--you're not helping educate them by being obnoxious.
