I worked for 4 months in the US last year, this morning I received a W2. I have no idea how these things work. In the notes in suggests that I may be entitled to a refund, although I do not have to file a tax return. How should I go about getting this refund?

I currently live in Ireland.

If you want a refund of the taxes withheld you will have to file a return -- Form 1040NR in your case.

If you earned less than $8,450 in US wages there won't be any tax liability but a return is required in order to get the withheld income tax refunded.

If you earned more than that, there IS a tax liability and you are required to file a return.

It's a bit of a kick in the teeth but any refund cheque will be issued in US$. The costs of encashing it in Ireland will have to be borne by you.

You received a compensation of $22 for a earlier tax 3 hundred and sixty 5 days (probable 2005). Did you itemize in 2005? if so, then some or each and every of the $22 is taxable contained in the three hundred and sixty 5 days you received the refund, 2006. in case you itemized for the three hundred and sixty 5 days of the refund, the astounding answer is to amend the go back and upload the taxable quantity of the $22 refund on your income. in reality, no added tax will be owed because the tax tables bypass in increments of $50. i might want to go away it on my own via the undeniable fact that is this variety of minimum quantity. in case you get a letter about this tiny added tax, merely pay what the letter says and be executed with it.

Check out www.irs.gov. They have information on filing returns from foreign countries. You can also download forms and instructions there, too.
