1st off I am atheist. This in response to a statement by a christian i saw earlier who stated that atheists tear down christianity for no good reason. I can think of a lot of very good reasons why christianity (or many other religions) is bad for humanity. How about:
1. Filling peoples heads with pure nonsense is a hideous betrayal
2. Religion is the petri deish for fundamentalism and extremism
3. It is a monumental waste of human resources and energy at a time when we should all be conserving energy
4. It promotes murder, geneocide, oppression of women, child abuse, revenge, jealousy (read Genesis folks!! this is what god does!!)
What are your reasons?

Dear Nicola, I shalln't go into great detail here to show what nonsense your response is but ask yourself this: who killed virtually everything on the planet in the biblical flood? That'll be your loving god. Have you ever actually read your bible?

As a child I trusted adults. I trusted them to tell me the truth about the world and the way things work. This trust was betrayed when they filled my head with all kinds of religious nonsense....stuff that they believed to be true but in fact was just a load of rubbish.
I will never forgive these people for that betrayal.
Religion should not be mentioned in schools until pupils are 18 years old and thus able to make their own minds up on such matters.

Oh dear what a rant where do i start? 1) What a ridiculous statement whats the point you cant prove that and many millions would beg to differ. 2) Religion has been and still is the foundation for many charities and has had members like Mahatma Gandhi , Martin Luther King JR , and this year is the 200th anniversary of the British Abolition of Slavery which was led by Christians like William Wilberforce. You could argue that politics is the petri dish for extremism after all we have had Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia but that of course would be ignoring other factors like the mentality and prejudices of its leadership. 3) I wont waste my energy with this one but say look at the second answer. 4) Selective reading do you bother to read the Gospels? its very easy to take scripture out of context it might be a idea to study the bible fully you might be surprised . So over all the answer is sometimes with bad leadership and usally not following the true teaching some faith groups can be bad but so can political parties and lets not forget the Nazis and the Survival of the Fittest now where did that come from?

As a scientist, I am naturally sceptical anyway.
The Bible is full of people fighting, killing and also full of hope and predictions of love. Blah Blah Blah.
According to religious nutcases the Earth is around 6000 years old.
Hmm, the the brains that 'God' apparently gave us are faulty. We have carbon-dated the Earth to around 4 - 4.5 billion years old.
Religions have Commandments from their Deity.
1 of the favourites of these is 'Thou Shalt Not Kill.......'
Note the dots, this is because the whole thing hadn't been put on public display. It carries on ' ...... unless the ones thou kill believe in a God other than me!'
Don't believe me?
Theres the Jihad currently going on. Theres the Crusades. Theres WW2 for the persecution of Blacks and Jews.
I will never believe anything that gets its definition from religion.
How can I trust it when Religion says Dinosaurs never existed. Man sprang from the mind of God and Woman was an afterthought.
If Christianity is right then the Jewish are wrong. If Judaism is right then Christianity is wrong.
There are to many contradictions in the Bible to trust.
It was written over the course of hundreds of years by lots of different people. It is their view not fact.
The only 'mystic' quality throughout the Universe, is the 'spark of life'. Even this can be explained through scientific methods.
Deities however, cannot.
To Goodbassist....
You seem to think that a real christian is a good man that lives by the tenets and guidelines set forth in the Bible.
Yet you lay into people with a different belief to yours! Reducing yourself to name-calling in order to get your point across.
You also seem to have forgotten the Crusades when Millions of 'Heathens' were put to the sword by the English religious nuts!
Religion is a useful mass mind controlling tool. Unfortunately it has been corrupted over the centuries by powerful men who refused to relinquish their hold on people.
The country of Vatican City is a huge example. Rather than have their cash taxed, they declared the city to be part of the realm of God and not subject to Taxation.
There is a NEW religion fighting for recognition now.
Jedi Knight.
Everyone laughs and yet the message is the same as almost every religion. Live in peace and harmony but fight if you need to.
Just because it is based on a movie doesn't reduce the 'sense' it makes.
Of course the so-called major religions will try to stop it but so what. Its just another religion being oppressed!
On the Electoral Register, Jedi Knight was listed as the 4th highest religion. That's just the UK, it doesn't include USA where a lot more people believe it!

This is what happens when someone takes statements out of text. There is a reason behind everything God does (and doesn't) do. Picking and choosing what you want without understanding the whole is biased and you will learn nothing. How about this one...
"For God so loved the world, that He gave His Only Begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." (John 3:16)
If you had children, would you send your firstborn to die for a bunch of sinners, that all may rejoin you someday? I think not. That's love.
How is it a waste of energy? The gathering of brothers and sisters with a common belief system can be a very powerful thing. If you find a church that is right for you personally, you will feel like you have just been adopted into a very large family with all the love and support you need to get through just about anything.
Number four is just plain wrong. These traits are not religion-based. They are the sins and actions of humans in general. Are you trying to tell me there isn't one Athiest in the judicial system that hasn't done any of these?
Don't blame the way the world is on God. Each person needs to be responsible for their own actions. ALL humans have made this society what it is today. A little bit of change for the sake of "human rights" here and there have compounded into a massive chasm, separating us from what is inherently right, including faith in God and looking forward to a life eternal.
I'm sorry you, like so much of the world, are blinded by personal experience and exposure to hypocritical believers. I pray that someday you realize there's more to life than what's on this pitiful little planet. I'll be praying for you-although the mere mention of it makes you cringe. Blessings

Religion is a waste of time. Wars have been fought and over the years millions have people have died over what are essentially a bunch of overly long fairy stories, they bring out the worst in people. Without religion you would have no religious extremists. Somebody tell me how that is a bad thing.
News flash for all the fantasists out there. God (whatever name you call him by) is no more real than Santa Claus, the Tooth fairy, the Easter bunny and the trolls that live under the bridge over my fish pond! Also have you ever noticed how Athiests seem to live happier lives than those tied to religion?
Anyone looking for proof of Christian extremism look no further than Northern Ireland

I don't get all this religion mumbo-jumbo either. A load of man-made codswallop that can be used in extreme cases to control peoples beliefs & also the way in which they run their lives. It causes far more trouble than it's worth & is a form of brain-washing. It's about time these people disconnected themselves from 'The Matrix' and come into the real world. What a load of old guff!
I was brought up as a Christian, been baptised, confirmed, been to Sunday School blah, blah, blah & I think i was about 11 when realised what a load of tosh it all is. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!

Why do we always blame religion? Did anyone think for a second the it iis not religion's fault but the fault of those people who wrongly apply it giving religion the bad image it does. As much as there are rules at work you should follow otherwise you will be punished or rewarded by your boss, the world has its boss and God also put his rules for appropriate conduct and God will punish those who dragged religion down the drain and reward those who followed Him properly. If people will stop being philosophers in life there will be room that peace will be around because God has only put what is best for the human race but we are too ignorant to realize that.

Religion is responsible for so many of the problems in the world it's hard to know where to start when listing them...
goodbassistsarehardtofind issued a challenge to find documented cases of Christian extremists as he doesn't believe they exist. Poor naive fool... All it takes is a 2 second google search to bring up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_terrorism which lists several including:
July 27, 1996 - Christian Identity terrorist Eric Robert Rudolph bombs Centennial Olympic Park. Kills 1, wounds 111.
Or take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Charles_Kopp. Kopp (a member of The Lambs of Christ) killed an abortionist. You have to love the irony of a pro-life murderer.

Religions are not bad. Christians or non-christians. When a group of people become fanatics, and have no more love in their hearts, then religions are bad. Sometimes, activities are more of cultural things.
Christianity or religions based on the teachings of Jesus Christ promote peace.
Some atheists are loving and peaceful are humane are good for humanity. Its the religious people who asked Jesus to be crucified.

The church was the reason for the dark ages. They suppressed knowledge in order to maintain power. They hid pre christian books simply because they were not christian, and locked up or killed people who found the truth that did not corresond to christian beliefs. Galileo, Copernicus, Newton, Darwin, and many modern scientists have had their progress retarded by the church. It is continuing to do this by proposing ludicrous theories like intelligent design, distracting scientists from their work
